Hydroponics  is a one word description of raising plants in water and letting the water carry the nutrients to the plant eliminating the need for dirt and allowing the grower complete control over the plants nutrient intake. Derived from the Greek word hydro, which means “water” and ponos, which means “labor or water-working”.

Soilless Gardening

Soilless Gardening

$33.17

SOILLESS GARDENING by W. F. GERICKE PUTNAM LONDON 42 Great Russell Street, W. C. I. THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO MY W1FK WHOSE UNFALTERING FAITH IN THE ULTIMATE REALIZATION OF CROP PRO DUCTION WITHOUT SOIL WAS A GREAT HELP IN ESTABLISHING HYDROPONICS. HYDROPONICS was really the second name to be applied to the science of soilless gardening. The first was aquicul ture, chosen because of its analogy to agriculture. Later it was found that this word had already been used in another connection and so could not be employed again. Hydro ponics was then selected because of its parallel relationship with geoponics, the Greek word meaning earth working, or, literally, agriculture. Hydroponics can now be carried on without restriction by anyone who desires to do so. But scientific research on the sub ject must be safeguarded, the public must be protected from exploitation, and business interests must assume the responsi bility for the development of the science. My own wishes are that research and educational institutions shall profit from the growth of hydroponics, that I shall be free to conduct research and teach the new subject, without being responsible for busi ness development except in an advisory capacity where this is needed. Those private individuals who gave of their private funds to test the validity of new ideas, and who provided the laboratory of practice wherein the dross of impracticability was removed from the hydroponic theory, have earned the utmost considera tion. They deserve the right to be consulted before any publi cation is made of results obtained in their plants. It is a pleasure to acknowledge here the cooperation and aid given the development of hydroponics by theestablishment of plants by Vetterle and Reinelt, Frank L. Lyons and E. W. Brundin, the California Packing Corporation, George O. Brehm, Martha Jane Dawson, Carl Gericke, Max B. Miller, Donald French, Pan American Airways, Inc., and E. O. Freund. vii viii Preface I am indebted to the Parafline Companies, Inc., for providing the asphalt-paper basins to California Redwood Association for the wooden basins to Pacific Portland Cement for the con crete basins. These were donated to me for experimental pur poses, and each material was the first of its kind used for soilless crop production. Nurseries provided planting stock. I am indebted to Vet terle and Reinelt, George C. Rocding, John Armstrong, and Jan de Graaf for their encouragement to hydroponics with lib eral donations of materials. The good wishes of a host of scientists who have followed the development since its first announcement in 1929 have been a great inspiration, and among these I especially wish to mention Dr. B. E. Assessment of Phytoremediation Potential of Herbaceous and Woody Species with Further Application in Brownfields.

Assessment of Phytoremediation Potential of Herbaceous and Woody Species with Further Application in Brownfields.

$84.21

Phytoextraction is defined as the use of green plants to extract toxic metals from contaminated soil. In contrast to the traditional methods of excavation and physical removal of soil, this emerging technology is recognized as a realistic, integrated, low-cost, ecologically-sound and sustainable strategy to remove contaminants. The Mukluk site in the town of Sprague, Connecticut, has been identified as a contaminated area that contains very high concentrations of lead (Pb2+) (138–82,000 mg/kg) as a result of its former use as a skeet range. The goal of this study was to determine the most promising plant species for lead phytoextraction at this site and similar sites in the Northeast region that are contaminated with high levels of lead (Pb2+). Prior to the field trials, plants were screened in greenhouse trials for their tolerance to Pb and their ability to accumulate the metal in their tissues. The initial screening included Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), blue fescue (Festuca ovina) and 6 willow species (Salix spp.). Salix demonstrated resistance to low pH and high lead accumulation compared to the herbaceous species. In parallel, using nutrient film technique (NFT) we determined critical toxicity levels of Pb based on effective concentration (EC50 ) for 5 woody and 5 herbaceous plant species that are suitable for growth in the northern U.S. Among herbaceous species, B. napus, B. juncea and B. oleracea were found to be the most efficient in uptake and accumulation of Pb in both roots and shoots. Contrary to previous reports that B. juncea and B. napus are able to accumulate Pb >1000 mg/kg, we found that these plant species did not extract sufficiently high quantities of Pb to be considered hyperaccumulators. In the hydroponic study, woody (Salix) species accumulated about 3 times more Pb in aboveground tissue than the herbaceous species. Among Salix species, the highest EC50, shoot and root biomass, tolerance index, and Pb content were recorded for S. x61, indicating that this clone holds promise for phytoextraction of lead. In pot experiments, five Salix species were evaluated for plant resistance, metal mobility and patterns of lead translocation within the plant using field soil. Willows showed tolerance to very high soil Pb concentrations (21,360 mg/kg), and with the addition of EDTA were able to take up and translocate significant amounts of Pb into aboveground tissues. The highest aboveground Pb content was found in S. x67 and S. eriocephala. In the field experiment, all willow species showed tolerance to heterogeneous high soil Pb concentrations. Plants were also able to take up and translocate Pb into aboveground tissues. However, lead content in plant tissues was low and no significant removal of Pb from the soil was found based on postharvest soil analysis. More field research is required to confirm the phytoextraction abilities of willows over a period of 3-4 years.

Involvement of Inflammation in Tau Pathology and Mechanisms That Drive Neurdegeneration in Alzheimer's Disease.

Involvement of Inflammation in Tau Pathology and Mechanisms That Drive Neurdegeneration in Alzheimer’s Disease.

$84.32

Two of the hallmarks of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), are (1) the appearance of proteinaceous deposits in inclusion bodies containing aggregates of ubiquitinated proteins and (2) activated microglia and astrocytes surrounding the diseased neurons. In Alzheimer’s disease, the intracellular inclusion bodies are known as neurofibrilary tangles (NFT). The mechanisms leading to inclusion body formation and their role in the progression of neurodegeneration are still largely unknown. Many of the proteins that accumulate in inclusion bodies depend on the ubiquitin/proteasome pathway (UPP) for their degradation. This pathway is responsible for the bulk (∼80%) of intracellular protein degradation. Because of its central role in the removal of mutated and misfolded proteins by degradation, disruption of the UPP is particularly relevant to the accumulation of aberrant proteins observed in aging-related neurodegenerative disorders, such as AD. Besides containing ubiquitinated proteins, one of the major components of NFTs is the microtubule associated protein "tau." Tau protein is abundant in neurons and is a highly soluble protein. Tau must be cleaved first to function as a seed for its self aggregation. Our main hypothesis is that toxic inflammation factors released by microglia and astrocytes will damage proteins in neurons causing protein misfolding. An abrupt or chronic increase in damaged proteins will overwhelm the proteasome, particularly in old age when proteasome activity is clearly impaired. If not resolved, the ensuing accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins is potently toxic and drives the cell to activate a death pathway, therefore launching apoptosis. Caspase activation associated with apoptosis leads to caspase-mediated proteolysis of a variety of proteins including tau, which is a microtubule stabilizing protein. Tau cleavage will destabilize microtubules and cause the collapse of the cell structure. In addition, tau cleavage will promote protein aggregation. All of these events culminate in neurodegeneration. We tested our hypothesis by incubating neuronal cells with the cytotoxic product of inflammation prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2). As we proposed, the initial event observed upon PGJ2 treatment was the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins. This was followed by apoptosis coinciding with caspase activation and tau cleavage, culminating in protein aggregation and cell death. In other studies, we established a direct correlation between proteasome impairment (accomplished by a genetic manipulation of its chymotrypsin-like activity) with an increased vulnerability to stress conditions induced by the heavy metal cadmium. Finally, we identified a unique aging-dependent mechanism that contributes to proteasome dysfunction in Drosophila melanogaster. Our studies were the first to show that the major proteasome form in old flies is the weakly active 20S core particle, while in younger flies the fully assembl

Indoor gardens allow us to ignore the inevitability of the seasons and bring natural beauty into our home environments all year round. In Glorious Indoor Gardens, noted garden writer and television personality Michele Driscoll Alioto presents 13 of the most beautiful private interior landscapes in the country. Some of the country’s most talented indoor gardeners share their passion with Alioto — from an eighty-five-year-old conservationist who presents his magnificent desert collection in Scottsdale, Arizona, to a terrarium-filled New York City loft shared by an astute gardening editor and an administrator at the New York Horticultural Society. Each describes how their indoor garden was developed and why, and what practical problems were overcome. By focusing on the design, history, and family use of each site, and by exploring a wide variety of planting possibilities and garden styles, this volume presents indoor plants not as mere accessories, but as representations of the gardener’s lifestyle. Each garden is accompanied by practical tips on relevant topics, such as growing orchids indoors, making light where there isn’t any, and hydroponics. An appendix includes detailed information on caring for indoor plants, as well as lists of plants best suited to a variety of situations and resources. — Features 13 extraordinary indoor gardens from every region of the country — some never before published — The recent interest in indoor plants and indoor garden environments is explored by an award-winning garden writer and TV host — This book shows you that anyone can start an indoor garden — not even a window is needed
